Rashaad Penny Out For Season & Other Seahawks Injury Updates

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday that running back Rashaad Penny is out for the season due to the knee injury he sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Rams.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll confirmed Monday the bad news that was feared following Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Second-year running back Rashaad Penny, who had become a big part of Seattle's offense in recent weeks, is out for the remainder of the season due to an ACL injury sustained on his first play of the game, a 16-yard reception.

"He has had a big impact the past few weeks and we've really liked his contribution, so you miss him," Carroll said. "A guy like that, you just don't replace it; you go to the next guy and he brings what he has.

"Unfortunately, we missed him (in Sunday's game) and we're going to miss him the rest of the season," Carroll said. "I have been really excited about him turning the corner and really taking ahold of this thing and contributing in a big way. C.J. (Prosise) will step into that role and (Travis) Homer will help out, and we'll see how those guys can do. We'll expect them to do well—C.J. has always done well when we give him the chance, now he'll know he's in the game plan and all of that, and I'm hoping he'll contribute in a big way."

Prosise had been inactive for five consecutive games prior to Sunday, but will now be expected to play a significant role going forward as the No. 2 back behind Chris Carson.

"He's got his own style to him," Carroll said of Prosise. "He's big, he's over 220 pounds, he's fast—(he and Penny) are about the same speed and all that. C.J. has the background as a receiver that makes him a little bit different type of threat that we've used when we have him in the game plan, so we'll look forward to him contributing that way. We know he's a big play guy, he's already had a couple of good big plays earlier in the year. We're going to count on him to really just pick up where Rashaad left off."

Penny's was the most significant injury to come out of the game, but Carroll provided a few other injury updates:

Linebacker Cody Barton

Barton briefly left the game with knee and ankle injuries, but came back and finished the game. Carroll said they'll need more tests to know if those injuries will be an issue going forward.

"He was OK and he got back in there," Carroll said. "He's very tough and very demanding of himself, so he just overcame it. We'll find out, I don't know."

Barton was making his first start in place of an injured Mychal Kendricks, and asked how the rookie played, Carroll said, "He played good and hard. Some first-time mistakes, a little bit of communication stuff—he was scrambling around getting lined up a few times. You can't play at your best when you're going through that. That's the problem, if you're a little bit off tempo with your calls and alignments and getting set, then you're not going to play as well, that's just the way it is. That was harder on him than maybe other guys because he hasn't been out there as much."

Linebacker K.J. Wright

Wright briefly left the game with a dislocated finger, but only missed a few plays, and Carroll said, "He's fine. He dislocated a finger, and he was OK to go back in."

Receiver Tyler Lockett

Lockett has not missed a game despite a leg injury in Week 10 that required a two-night hospital stay, but between that injury and a bout with the flu, he hasn't quite been himself for much of the past month. Carroll said Lockett looked better over the past week and is looking like his old self.

"I thought he played well," Carroll said. "He was clearly back in action and feeling good and physically right. He's past being sick the week before, so I think we should expect him to continue to contribute in a big way."

Defensive end Ziggy Ansah

Ansah, who sustained a stinger in Seattle's Week 13 win over Minnesota practiced last week, but was not cleared for game action. Carroll said it's too soon to know if Ansah will be available for this week's game at Carolina.

"He certainly should (practice), it's just whether his strength can be mustered here by the end of the week and get back at it," Carroll said.

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney

Clowney has a core muscle injury that he has played through in the past two games after missing the Seahawks' Week 11 win in Philadelphia, but it's something he's still dealing with.

"He's hurting," Carroll said. "He's going to have to work his way through the week to make it through gameday. He's playing really tough under the circumstance. He's got some core issues he's working with, but he's making it through it. He's toughing it out and doing the rehab and all that stuff."
