While guard Phil Haynes wasn't a starter for most of the 2022 season, he was a big part of the Seahawks' offense, so it's no surprise that the team decided to sign Haynes to a one-year contract extension before he could become a free agent next month.

Haynes, who was selected by the Seahawks in the fourth round of the 2019 draft, battled injuries early in his career, but began showing his potential late in the 2021 season when he started a pair of games.

In 2022, Haynes started only three games, but he appeared in 15 and regularly rotated at right guard with Gabe Jackson to help keep the veteran guard healthy, and finished the season playing 51 percent of Seattle's offensive snaps.

"He's got a starting caliber to us," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said in his end-of-season press conference. "We like him. He's physical. Consistent is a good word for him because he's there. He's there for you. He's a great kid. It worked out well to put him and Gabe in. It helped Gabe with his knee, and it gave Phil a chance to be a comfortable starter. We had three guys. If anybody went down, we could rotate our guys around and get it taken care of. I've got high hopes that Phil could be a real factor for us."

Seahawks guard Phil Haynes signed a contract extension with the team at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, Wash. on February 21, 2023. Read more.
